Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Sam Watkins as the Interim Principal of Garrett High School, effective immediately. Watkins joins GKB with a distinguished career in educational leadership and a long record of student-centered service.
Watkins brings with him more than two decades of administrative experience, including his tenure as Superintendent of Peru Community Schools from 2014-2023, where he led districtwide academic initiatives, strengthened school culture, and guided the corporation through major transitions. As superintendent, Watkins oversaw two largescale improvement projects, including renovating the high school building to take on seventh and eighth graders.
Prior to his superintendency, Watkins spent 13 years as principal of Peru Junior High School, starting in 2002, earning statewide recognition for academic performance and helping the school achieve a four-star rating from the Indiana Department of Education.
Before going to Peru schools, Watkins was a teacher and coach in Marion, Kokomo, and Wabash County, Watkins is known for his student-focused leadership style and his commitment to building collaborative school communities. Throughout his career, he has emphasized removing barriers to student success, expanding opportunities, and maintaining high academic and behavioral expectations.
Watkins received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ball State University and his EdS from Indiana State University.
Watkins comes from a family deeply rooted in education. His wife is a longtime educator and administrator, and their three children have followed similar paths. Two are currently studying at Ball State University—one pursuing school speech pathology and the other architecture—while his third child and daughter-in-law both work in elementary education.
“We are pleased to share that Mr. Watkins has been appointed as the Interim Principal of Garrett High School. With a proven track record of leadership, dedication, and a deep commitment to student success, Mr. Watkins brings a wealth of experience to this role,” said Garrett-Keyser-Butler CSD Superintendent Dan Durrwachter.
“During this transition period, Mr. Watkins will work closely with staff, families, and the community to ensure continuity, support our ongoing initiatives, and maintain a positive learning environment for all. Please join us in welcoming and congratulating Mr. Watkins as he steps into this important position. We look forward to a successful remainder of the school year.”
Watkins will lead GHS while the district conducts a comprehensive search for the school’s permanent principal. His background in mentoring administrators and stabilizing school operations will help ensure a smooth and productive transition for students, families, and staff.
